"Living on the Edge," our online diary.

Canadian Outdoor Leadership Training (COLT) is accredited with the Private Career Training Institutions Agency of British Columbia.

What is COLT?
The first Outdoor Leadership Training course was offered at Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre (aka SPL, aka Strathcona, aka The Lodge) in 1977 - called the "Apprenticeship Program". Since thenCamping the course has grown, with three 100-day semesters now offered each year.

THE GOAL
To develop knowledge, leadership and skills to a level required to guide/instruct introductory outdoor pursuits in both wilderness and residential settings.

The semester is ideal for individuals anticipating a career in this field, and also of great value to those wanting to take "time out" to develop their own personal potential and direction. Students will develop water- and land-based outdoor skills and the judgment to be self-reliant in ocean, river, rock and mountain environments.

Group leadership is actively practiced through the role playing of leader and follower. Regular group debriefings help process the role playing experiences. Wilderness environmental stewardship is the underlying philosophy on which the leadership and skills courses are built.

CERTIFICATION
• The Recreational Canoeing Association of BC - Flatwater Instructor - Tandem Moving Water Paddler Level - Solo Moving Water Paddler Level
• Industry Canada - Restricted Marine Radio Operator License
• Association of Canadian Sea Kayak Guides - Assistant Guide Certification
• Wilderness Alert - "Explorer" for Leaders

ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS
The COLT semester is intended for mature adults 19 years old and older or have a high school diploma, who are in good physical health, have a positive mental attitude, are prepared for a team approach to learning and have a true love of the outdoors.

FEEDBACK
Students are provided with regular oral feedback, and a written evaluation and certificate of course completion. These and other industry standard certifications will be mailed following the completion of the semester.
